Last day in Phoenix

December 31, 2015

All good things must come to an end, and our foray into the land of sunshine and warmth was no exception. Fortunately, since we were on an evening flight, we had most of the day to soak up that last bit of sun.

We started with a bike ride through what has become our favourite park -- north along the canal to Old Town Scottsdale. I'd heard about this section of the city and thought it would be a shame not to check it out.

Our route led us first through the grounds of the civic centre and library, beautifully landscaped and featuring many fountains and lots of green grass. Probably not very environmentally friendly, but definitely pretty.

This statue depicts the founders of Scottsdale, a preacher and his wife.

The old town was sort of interesting -- lots of art galleries and shops -- but seems to be more of a night place, as not much was open.

I was curious about Gallery Russia, which I later learned sells art from the former USSR. That would have been worth checking out.

We just rode through the streets and then turned around and rode back to the hotel, where we met up with Javed and Andrea and went to yet another Mexican restaurant for lunch.

In the afternoon, we wanted to go for a hike, but everything was so busy, because of the holiday, that we simply went to Papago Park and walked around the northern section. This area is bare in the extreme, but there are trails and caves, so we walked around and up and down, chatting and enjoying the view. This was pretty tame hiking compared to what we have been doing, but still it was nice to be outside and warm.
